The drive to Cornwall was not so great, though. Google promised 4.5 hours. It took us 7. Roundabouts galore, tiny roads, merging lanes. It took a long, long time, and the girls each had massive, seizure-like breakdowns, but the scenery was completely breathtaking! It was the most beautiful countryside I've ever seen. Lush, green carpeted hills--fluorescent emerald--bounded by hedges, spreading trees, flowers, streams and sheep, with glimpses of the sea. Had I been deaf to the screaming and oblivious to the overall chaos inside the car, it would have been the best drive ever.
We rented a cottage overlooking the quaint fishing village of Mevagissey.
On Saturday morning, after a damp, misty morning, the clouds rolled away and left us with a sunny, gorgeous day. We explored the small town, ate donuts, bought some souvenirs, then ate a Cornish pasty in the harbor for lunch.
The most stunning view of the sea on our drive back to our cottage. Perfection!
And this was my dessert--clotted cream, jam, and biscuits.

The drive doesn't sound fun, but the rest of the trip looks like it was just lovely!
The views are so beautiful! Too bad I can't trade places with Esmé or Penny and go on your adventures. I would promise to not have breakdowns, neither massive nor minor. And happily eat anyplace you choose, for as long as you choose.
I too wonder what clotted cream really is and is it really for dessert?
Clotted cream is like a mix between whipped cream and butter. It has the texture of fluffy butter and is sweet. You feel like you're going to have a heart attack after eating not very much but it is soooo good. It is a very traditional cornish food. They call biscuits and cream 'cream tea' .
What a lovely time and a lovely place. I'm so glad you have the courage and patience to have these great adventure trips. Soon the difficulties will be forgotten and only the beautiful sights and memories remain. Penny gets cuter by the minute ;~))
Oh the jealousy. Your girls are looking very British. I loved Esme's little outfit with her hat, so darling. I'm just dying over your adventures... gaaaahhhh!
